LEARNING TO LOVE DIFFERENT YANKEE CANDLE SCENTS

Everyone has their own personal favourite type of scent and may come to Yankee Candles thinking that they are going to be polarised with one particular range.

Indeed there are many self-proclaimed ‘foodies’ that only search out the ‘Food & Spice’ range and have shelves full of sweet treat candles.

I came to Yankee Candle via Christmas Fir, Sugared Apple and Christmas Rose this past wintery season and boldly stated that there were many types of candles that I wouldn’t like – namely anything Vanilla or  Coconut.

Other brands of candle that my wife had previously used had a synthetic, cloying sweetness that I didn’t like at all. Fast forward six months and Red Velvet and Black Coconut are two of my very favourite Yankee Candle scents.

One of my very favourites

We have changed our opinion on many candles during the course of the year and the only answer I can give is – you can trust Yankee Candle!

Even smelling the candle in a shop only gives you a brief note or two in an unusual environment. It is amazing how different the experience can be in your own home.

A few months ago Warm Spice, Loves Me Loves Me Not, Sicilian Lemon and Home Sweet Home were definite “no buys” for us. We now have three of those in large jars and after the Sicilian Lemon in melt form bought only yesterday - I now want a large jar!

Let’s take a look at these in particular and how your opinions can change and why perhaps you shouldn’t be so quick to write off a particular fragrance. Give your nose another chance! Indeed – what we’ve found over the past months is that sometimes those fragrances that you don’t like instantly, ultimately end up being your favourites. The more complex the blend, the longer you may  have to wait to get a full appreciation of the scent.

Warm Spice – My wife always turned her nose up at this saying it smelled of Toffee, whereas I had no strong opinion one way or the other. A friend saw a large jar at a bargain price and I asked her to buy it. Even though we’ve yet to light it, both of us now appreciate the unusual and complicated fragrance this is.

Loves Me Loves Me Not – I always had a bit of a soft spot for this fragrance, but again my wife didn’t like it (do you notice a pattern here?) and I ultimately forced a large jar into our household. The lush smell of a flower filled meadow is now an absolute favourite for both of us.

Sicilian Lemon – Now, we’ve both always disliked this one. For no other reason really other than we’ve always liked Sparkling Lemon and this (supposed) creamier version didn’t quite hit the same spot. While out yesterday though my wife picked up a couple of melts for us to try – and my, oh my – smelling them in our own home really brings Sicilian Lemon to life. It has a beautiful sourness to it with a creamy undertone – completely different to Sparkling Lemon – and this is now racing up our wants list!

Lastly, Home Sweet Home  was another we passed by many times with neither of us giving it much positive comment. However on one of the recent QVC shows, it was Rosa’s description of its homeliness and being like ‘sitting down for a nice cup of tea and a chat’ that made me give it a second chance. A melt was soon followed by a large jar and wow, Home Sweet Home is special indeed – for both of us!!

So basically my advice is to open yourself up to the world of Yankee Candle. Don’t pigeon hole yourself into one type of fragrance as there are dozens out there that you will potentially adore. The one thing you can be absolutely sure of is the world beating quality and true to life scent that you will get.

Try a melt or a sampler – you may find a whole new world opens up to you.

You never know I may even get to like Clean Cotton one day….!
