ANDY’S YANKEE CANDLE SCENT THROW (STRENGTH) GUIDE

Following some  chat on our ever so friendly TEAM YANKEE GLOBAL Facebook group a few years ago, I decided to put together a personal Yankee Candle scent strength guide which I am regularly updating.

The discussion on our group centred around ‘wouldn’t it be a great idea if Yankee Candle put a scent strength/throw number on the jars’ in order to assist customers with knowing whether a scent is a lighter one or a stronger one.

The culmination of the discussion was that it could never work as what is a strong scent to one person is a weak one to another, it is all highly personal and down to your own perception. We even realised that as a group we’d disagree. Yankee Candle would be in a lose, lose situation!

So, I picked up the gauntlet and run with it via my blog!

Disclaimer – This is a wholly personal opinion regarding the strength of Yankee Candle fragrances. It is based primarily on my own opinion but at times I have taken into account what I believe to be a general consensus among Yankee Candle customers. You may disagree with a rating based on your personal experience which is of course fine, we all have different scent sensitivity and our candles are all poured differently and will be from different years, have been stored differently etc etc etc.

The ratings are based on what I would expect from a large or medium jar burn on average. Please note jar burns can vary greatly. Yankee Candle melts (tarts) and Scent Cups will usually give decidedly more throw, whereas votives, tea lights and small jars will usually give less.

What is a throw? This is the amount of scent that permeates into the room that you are burning the candle in.

I personally have well over 200 different large Yankee Candle jars and I have used the majority of them. I have never ever found a Yankee Candle that gives off no scent. Sometimes you’ll pick up scent after a couple of burns or it will be variable, but every single candle I have has delivered a good scent at some point or another during its life. With that in mind, please don’t be put off by those rated ‘1’ as you can get good scent from these candles – and indeed some of those with a 1 or 2 are my favourite Yankee Candles of all.

Ratings :

1 Light scent  or little throw detectable from the candle. (I would recommend burning these candles in a zero traffic room with no other smells or draughts present  or in a smaller room).

2 A lighter scent throw that gently permeates a room or one that is really only noticed as you leave and re-enter a room

3 Medium throw which should fill a good sized room given time

4 Strong throw which should fill a large room

5 Very strong throw which will fill a large room and beyond!
